Staying Cool in Your Travel Trailer
As you gear up for summer RV camping fun, there are a few things you should keep in mind. In addition to choosing your destinations and creating an itinerary, you’ll want to think about how you’re going to keep cool in your rig. After all, it can get pretty hot out on the road. We have gathered some helpful tips below, so read on to learn more.
Run the Air Conditioning System
The best way to keep the interior of your camper cool is by using an air conditioner. Most vehicles come equipped with an A/C unit, especially newer models. This is the most effective way to keep your rig cool on a hot day. Some travelers keep their unit running all the time, but others don’t want to use up all that energy. When you do choose to run the A/C system, make sure all the windows and doors are closed.
Change the Direction and Location
One of the most overlooked steps in keeping your travel trailer cool is the direction and location in which you park your vehicle. It’s smart to park next to a large tree whenever you can. This is especially useful if you find a tree that provides plenty of shade during the hottest parts of the date. Whether there’s some shade or not, you should always try to park your camper with most of the windows facing away from the afternoon sun. The door side of your rig probably has an awning, which can also be used to deflect some of the sunlight.
Cover the Windows
You might’ve seen the reflective bubble insulations that people put on their car windows when they’re parked. Fortunately, this is a viable option for your RV, too. Even when your windows are closed tight, the sun beating down on the glass can cause your interior to heat up quickly. Keep those rays away from your rig and combat the extra heat by covering the windows.
Proper Ventilation
Last but not least, ensuring you have proper ventilation will allow you to pump out excess hot air and bring in as much cool air as possible. Open all the windows on the side of the rig that’s facing away from the sun and close the ones on the sunny side. You might want to consider adding some fans for better circulation. You can also think about installing attic vents if you don’t already have them. Heat often gets trapped in the roof and these vents will help push it out.
