Every camping trip is a new opportunity to experience thrilling adventures and make memories with your family. That family should include all members, even the furry ones. Your pets are an important part of your family, so you’d also want to bring them with you. Just make sure you keep their needs in mind so they will be able to enjoy the trip as much as you do. We have provided some tips for preparing your pet for travel and helping them adjust to RV camping.

Create Familiarity

Once you have your RV, give your pet some time to explore the new environment before you hit the road. Take them inside the camper and let them wander around in their own time. There’s going to be a lot of new smells and new visual stimuli, so they’ll probably take things slowly the first time around. Don’t push them to explore any faster than they want. In fact, consider doing this a few times so they can get comfortable with the new environment. After a while, they’ll be less overwhelmed, hopefully leading to a less stressful trip for them.

Keep a Normal Routine

As much as is possible, maintain your pet’s regular, day-to-day routine. Trying to work this into your schedule may be a little difficult, but try to feed and exercise them at the usual times. You’ll also want to maintain their sleeping schedule. This will keep them from becoming irritable. Not to mention, it will maintain some normalcy for them while everything else is changing.

Pack the Necessities

When you’re packing for your family, make sure you pack all the supplies your pet is going to need. Pack the kind of food they eat at home and plenty of it. Even under normal circumstances, changing their diet can upset their digestive tract and make them sick. The farther you get from home, the bigger the possibility is that a particular brand or flavor isn’t carried in local pet stores.

You might also want to bring their bed from home. This can be a little bit of a hassle, but it will have their own scent on it and make for more comfortable sleeping accommodations. To keep your pet entertained, bring along some of their favorite toys and treats. Finally, don’t forget any medications they’re on.

The most important approach here is to try and reduce the amount of stress that comes with travel. Even the most enthusiastic and adventurous animals may feel a little overwhelmed with all the change. Just remember that you know them best, so you’ll know what kinds of activities and strategies will keep them calm.
